welcome.

Hello and welcome to my photoblog. I am delighted to have you here! This blog serves as a way of sharing my most recent photo sessions with clients and their family and friends, and is also the first place to hear recent announcements about the studio as well as special blog-reader only discounts.

I am a primarily natural light portrait photographer based out of Madison, Wisconsin. My focus is on babies, children and families, although I also love to shoot a limited number of weddings per year. My portrait sessions take place entirely on location -- either at your home or at another location around Madison. I love to explore new places, so I'm very open to your suggestions. And of course, I have some favorite spots that I'm always ready to explore again as well.

In addition to my blog, please also check out my main website (it is the "my website" link on the menu above). If you have any questions or would like to book a session, please click on the "contact me" link in the menu above to send me an e-mail. Thanks again for stopping by, and please enjoy your visit!

style.

My approach toward photography is deceptively simple: catch real moments of your children really being themselves. Silly giggles, sweet kisses from mommy, tickles from a big sister, laughing while watching doggie run through the park... These are the moments that make up real life. These are the moments from childhood that pass by all too fast. And these moments, to me, are where the real beauty of childhood resides. The same philosophy governs my approach to wedding photography.

My style is largely photojournalistic and non-obtrusive, while at the same time I am always working to create beautiful and lasting memories of life as it unfolds. The most common words used to describe my photographs are the ones I have chosen as the tagline for my studio: Modern. Fun. Real. Life. People often comment that my photographs have a sense of warmth and emotion to them -- which I consider the highest compliment possible.

summer.

On an absolutely gorgeous and very bright (check out the shadows!) morning a few days ago, I spent an enjoyable couple of hours walking around the city that I love and photographing a couple that drove all the way down from Minneapolis for their session. I’ll be shooting their wedding next year, so it was...

Still crazy after all these years.

I was contacted by this couple to take photographs to celebrate their third wedding anniversary. This was the second of these types of sessions that I’ve done, and I have to say that I love the idea. All of the photos were all taken near where they live, and we ended the session by taking...

Say “Zai Jian” to winter.

I’m hoping that by writing it down here, that the statement above will come true. I thought we might have been done with snow altogether, but this weekend we got a bit more. Thankfully, it was nearly 50 degrees today so most of it melted away. Good riddance! As my final goodbye to winter 08-09,...

Let it snow?

We had hints a while back of an early spring, or at least an end to the piles of snow that accumulated in January. I even went out without a jacket several times, and saw some dudes walking around with shorts on (they were probably nuts, but still…) After this past Friday/Saturday, it looks...

Favorite moments of 2008.

First an administrative note: The studio will be closed from this weekend through January 5 to allow me to celebrate the holidays with my family. I will be checking e-mails throughout the holidays, but it may take me just a bit longer than usual to get back to you. I also have some wonderful photos...

Can I just title this post as awesome?

‘Cause I really can’t think of any other words. These photos feature one of the coolest couples I have ever met, and their equally super cool dog named Steve. I photographed them last year in the fall, so we reprised that again this year. Something cute that happened during this shoot… we were taking pictures...

The question.

There are going to be a bunch of photos in this post, and it might be a little more wordy than some. But I promise you, in the end, it will be worth it. So please, sit down and grab a refreshing beverage. I’ll wait…
A few weeks ago I was contacted by a woman who...

Madison (love).

This past Saturday, I shot an engagement session with Erin and Brett in downtown Madison. They are a very fun couple who are actually getting married in Kauai, Hawaii this winter (unfortunately I’m not going to be taking their wedding photos!). They both graduated from Wisconsin, and have lived here for years. So they thought...

Summertime.

A little while back, on a very bright and sunny summer day, I ventured out to the country for a photoshoot. This photoshoot had a few different purposes (family photos, 3 month photos, business headshot). Very varied, but fun. You might recognize the little girl from this session — or more likely, you might recognize...

A (rather hot) walk in the park.

Yesterday was a lot of fun. I drove to Waukesha and did a little photo session with some very cool people and their very cool dogs. The original idea was to get some nice pictures of the fall foliage (love that word), which I think we did. But we had to deal with an unexpected...
