welcome.

Hello and welcome to my photoblog. I am delighted to have you here! This blog serves as a way of sharing my most recent photo sessions with clients and their family and friends, and is also the first place to hear recent announcements about the studio as well as special blog-reader only discounts.

I am a primarily natural light portrait photographer based out of Madison, Wisconsin. My focus is on babies, children and families, although I also love to shoot a limited number of weddings per year. My portrait sessions take place entirely on location -- either at your home or at another location around Madison. I love to explore new places, so I'm very open to your suggestions. And of course, I have some favorite spots that I'm always ready to explore again as well.

In addition to my blog, please also check out my main website (it is the "my website" link on the menu above). If you have any questions or would like to book a session, please click on the "contact me" link in the menu above to send me an e-mail. Thanks again for stopping by, and please enjoy your visit!

style.

My approach toward photography is deceptively simple: catch real moments of your children really being themselves. Silly giggles, sweet kisses from mommy, tickles from a big sister, laughing while watching doggie run through the park... These are the moments that make up real life. These are the moments from childhood that pass by all too fast. And these moments, to me, are where the real beauty of childhood resides. The same philosophy governs my approach to wedding photography.

My style is largely photojournalistic and non-obtrusive, while at the same time I am always working to create beautiful and lasting memories of life as it unfolds. The most common words used to describe my photographs are the ones I have chosen as the tagline for my studio: Modern. Fun. Real. Life. People often comment that my photographs have a sense of warmth and emotion to them -- which I consider the highest compliment possible.

beautiful boy.

Meet sweet and wonderful one week old N. He and his momma came into the studio for a session on his one week birthday, and a few days later we had a shortened session so that we could get a few photos with his dad too. I don’t have to tell you that they are...

mother. nature.

This maternity session took place on one of the most gorgeous fall evenings we’ve had this year. Right around sunset is such a wonderful time for a photo session, and it’s not a time of day that I actually get to shoot very often unless it’s a maternity, engagement or wedding session (the so-called “witching...

expecting.

It was a beautiful summer afternoon when I photographed this adorable couple. They are expecting their first child in just a few weeks, and they are just so excited that they practically glow (both of them!).  It was a combo session that took place partially at Olin Park (gorgeous this time of year) and partially...

up north.

This was a special extended session. It involved some absolutely breathtaking scenery, one of my favorite little models (you’ve seen her a bunch of times before) and her beautiful pregnant mom.  A bit of explanation is needed… the mom-to-be is a friend of mine, and she invited me up to their absolutely beautiful cabin in...

Glowing at 32 weeks.

I’m doing something right now that I don’t usually do, and that’s posting my sneak peek of photos on the very same day that I take them. I haven’t photographed a maternity couple in a little while (ok, only about a month… but still) and the couple I had into the studio today was simply...

Maternity in black and white (and a bit of color).

I love black and white photography. I also love that, thanks to the beauty of digital photography, I can be indecisive at the time I’m taking the photographs and later on decide which to convert to black and white. Sometimes people ask me how I decide which photos to convert. Honestly, when I’m going through...

Mini sessions, reprise.

I finished up editing the mini session photos today. It took me a bit longer than I originally expected, mainly because I had a couple of unexpected newborn sessions that popped up in the meantime. So thank you to everyone for your patience! I want to tell you a little story, but in order to...

Studio inauguration sessions, part II

Presenting… the afternoon sessions from the inauguration mini sessions. It is currently 1 am as I am writing this, because I started editing these tonight and just couldn’t stop. I’m sure you photographers out there know how that goes… If you want to read more about the setup for the sessions, read the post right...

Beautiful. New. Family.

This post is long overdue, since I photographed this beautiful family back in December. This explains a little bit about the Christmas colors and lights in the background. Their little girl has now arrived, and is as cute as can be! In these maternity photos, there is such a feeling of excitement and anticipation…...

Favorite moments of 2008.

First an administrative note: The studio will be closed from this weekend through January 5 to allow me to celebrate the holidays with my family. I will be checking e-mails throughout the holidays, but it may take me just a bit longer than usual to get back to you. I also have some wonderful photos...
