Meet sweet and wonderful one week old N. He and his momma came into the studio for a session on his one week birthday, and a few days later we had a shortened session so that we could get a few photos with his dad too. I don’t have to tell you that they are a lovely family. I also don’t really have to tell you that they love this little man to pieces. I fell a little bit in love with him too, admittedly. Particularly because he blessed me by being superbly content, and slept peacefully just about all through his session. Perhaps my favorite part of going through these photos was catching glimpses of that little whirl (whorl?) of hair on the top of his head.

Is it possible to be nostalgic for something that isn’t even really gone? It’s September now. My three year old and I are in search of a new playground since the kids are now back in school and using the one that we used to frequent. The start of the football season is almost here (which actually has me more than a little bit excited). But today I was cleaning off the back porch and saw T’s sandals sitting there. And it made me nostalgic for summer. It was a good one. A great one with my two little guys. I’m glad there is apple picking and pumpkin carving and jumping in the leaves to look forward to, or I might just shed a tear or two.

With the autumn cool in the air, it’s time to share a session from early this summer. And it might just make you nostalgic too. A is one of my Baby Sprout clients, and was 9 months old at the time of this session. These photos were all taken on location, with about 80% of them underneath a gorgeous old willow tree (I couldn’t resist — I have a soft spot for willows). The family loves that willow tree too, and I’m sure this little girl will be having lots of tea parties and picnics there in the future. For now, though, she was happy to sit contentedly in the green grass and enjoy the sunshine. Summer, I will miss you.

I’m sure I’ve said this before, but one of my absolute favorite favorite parts of this job is having the opportunity to re-connect with clients and watch their children grow. Whether I see them every three months or every year, it is always so amazing to see how their little ones have changed… And at the same time, the things that don’t change are equally fascinating to me. This is H, who came into the studio a while back for his two year session. I photographed him in the same place on his first birthday, and my goodness how he has grown up! You can view the blog post on his one year session here if you are interested (you probably want to go ahead and click that link right now –he is sooo cute). He is an amazing little boy with an equally amazing family. Mom has already promised that she will bring him back for his third birthday session next summer, and frankly I can’t wait. Till then, little man, enjoy your adventures!

ps. I’m really trying to get caught up on posting. I have a bunch of sessions as well as two weddings to share with you! I’m making a promise to myself to blog daily for the next week. So keep checking back!

From his one year session…

And now…

Something about this next one I adore, and I can’t quite put my finger on why. I think H seems simultaneously like an old soul and a little boy. And the colors are so rich and deep.

Mom said this was their favorite photo from the session, and I think I might agree. So very two.

We did brave the very windy conditions outside for a few photos, and I especially love the last one of H running toward his dad. It was the last one I took. I seem to always take some of my favorite photos of H as my last shots of the day.

I decided to do something new with this blog post and tell a bit of the story behind the images. I thought this was the perfect session to use for this sort of endeavor on the blog and also to accompany this small announcement : I will be closing the studio portion of my business this fall.

I have been doing a LOT of soul-searching recently — seriously, it’s like I’m 16 again. And I have come to the conclusion that I am meant to be an on-location photographer. I just love it. I love being outdoors and creating environmental portraits. I love capturing the stories of parents and children in their own homes. I love the challenges inherent in going to a new place for each session, because I also LOVE the excitement and inspiration that I find in every new place. I certainly loved my studio, and I will really miss it. It was the perfect location for the type of natural light photography that I love, and it served me well over the last two years. But I found, deep down, that it wasn’t the right direction for me. I’m going back to my roots, and going purely on-location from here on out. I’m excited. I’m excited to get out and explore more of the city that I love as I search for new inspiration, and I am excited to bring you along on that journey with me.

So with that, I bring you to the story of a session. And a warm summer evening spent with 14 month old C. A few technical notes: these images are presented in exact chronological order (also something I don’t always do) since it seemed to make sense for this post. All photos were taken with the Canon 5D (not the 5D Mark II, which I own but don’t love quite as much). Most photos were taken with the Canon 50mm 1.2L lens (pure butter for evening portraits).

This was my second session with C. She was about 10 months old when I photographed her last fall at the Arboretum. At that time, she didn’t really like the outdoors. I’m happy to see that this seems to have changed. Her mom was formerly an art director with a very well known children’s company, and so I love doing sessions with her because she has such fun ideas for clothing and props. I’m not a big fan of props in all circumstances, but I do love them when they suit the moment and when they mean something to the child, and this session had exactly the RIGHT types of props. Anywhoo, without further ado…

The session started at about 6 pm in July. Mom had seen this staircase and the cool turquoise wall while out on a walk, so we did a few photos there before heading to their home for the rest of the session.

5:59 pm: I love this image because I am a total softie for father/daughter images. I love how she is so eager to get out to explore, but he’s right there supporting her.

24-70mm f2.8L lens, 1/250 sec at f/2.8, ISO 100

6:05 pm: Pretty straightforward but oh-so-stylish family portrait. What makes this photo for me: the black staircase, and the grass (which we brought with us).

24-70mm f/2.8L lens, 1/250 sec at f/2.8, ISO 100

6:19 pm: C is holding a tissue flower poof, which her mom had made for a party a few weeks earlier and which C just loved. I love the color in this one. Her stylist momma really shows in this one, I think. Her expression is also pretty darn cute.

50mm f/1.2L lens, 1/125 sec at f/2.8, ISO 100

6:21 pm: Sunflare, how I love thee. We’re back at their house now, and the sun is just getting to that magical point in the sky where everything starts glowing.

50 mm f/1.2L lens, 1/250 sec at f/2.8, ISO 100

6:29 pm: I adored this quilt. And I loved her little dress with it. I feel like this photo could have been taken in the 40s, and I think that’s what I love about it. Square crop to show off more of the quilt.

50mm f/1.2L lens, 1/125 sec at f/2.8, ISO 100

6:30 pm: Bubbles! Just pure joy of childhood is the reason I love this one. I also love the light and the colors.

50mm f/1.2L lens, 1/125 sec at f/2.8, ISO 100

6:35 pm: Love the connection in this one. It feels sort of documentary. I also love that their dog is in the background.

24-70mm f/2.8L lens, 1/125 sec at f/2.8, ISO 100

6:38 pm: Sunflare again. With a big yellow ball this time — I think it was her mom’s exercise ball, and C loves to roll it around their backyard. Meaningful, and so fun.

24-70mm f/2.8L lens, 1/125 sec at f/2.8, ISO 100

6:40 pm: How could you not love this image? Her expression is PRICELESS. I think the composition is pretty fun too.

24-70mm f/2.8L lens, 1/125 sec at f/2.8, ISO 100

6:42 pm: Now we changed clothes and brought out the water. C loves to play with water, and the light was getting gorgeous by this time. From here on out, I loved almost every photo I took.

24-70mm f/2.8L lens, 1/125 sec at f/2.8, ISO 100

6:43 pm: Same reasoning. Great expression.

24-70mm f/2.8L lens, 1/125 sec at f/2.8, ISO 100

6:45 pm: I like to combine close-up shots with some long range ones. Her eyelashes are so cute. Notice how my camera settings haven’t really changed this whole session? Yet the photos have a pretty different feel? That’s because of where the light was falling and how the shot was composed.

24-70mm f/2.8L lens, 1/125 sec at f/2.8, ISO 100

6:46 pm: I love the water dropping from her elbow, honestly. And the little pops of color throughout.

24-70mm f/2.8L lens, 1/125 sec at f/2.8, ISO 100

6:51 pm: Kids and dogs are two of my favorite things in the world. So when they come together so cutely, I’m in photographer heaven. By this time, C had taken out her play fruit, and was kind enough to share some with her doggie. One of my absolute favorites from the session, just because of that connection.

24-70mm f/2.8L lens, 1/125 sec at f/2.8, ISO 250

6:56 pm: A classic game for this age. I like the light, the bokeh, the way the tree frames her face, and the connection. It’s really always about the connection for me.

24-70mm f/2.8L lens, 1/125 sec at f/2.8, ISO 250

6:59 pm: Her mom had said she liked shots of kids walking away sometimes. I told her those aren’t really hard to get when you’re talking about a 14 month old. But then I saw this image when I was going through their gallery, and it absolutely jumped out at me. One of my favorites from this year. It’s blurry, but I LOVE that. Says something about the fleeting nature of childhood to me. And she just has such a determined bounce to her step, too. I actually love just about everything about this photo.

24-70mm f/2.8L lens, 1/200 sec at f/2.8, ISO 250

7:02 pm: It was getting toward the end of the session, but we kept going because C was still pretty cheery and the light was just beautiful. This bench is theirs, and was near the backyard if not in it already. There were a LOT of photos that I loved with the bench. This one I love because of her eyes and those little wet curls.

50mm f/1.2L lens, 1/400 sec at f/1.8, ISO 250

7:05 pm: Simple. But that’s what I like about it. Profile shots aren’t that common in child photography, but I don’t really know why. The bokeh (blurry parts in the background, in simple terms) is pretty nice in this one too.

50mm f/1.2L lens, 1/500 sec at f/2.0, ISO 250

7:06 pm: Then we found a pinwheel that they happened to have in a plant. And I adore the pinwheel shots. As a mother of boys, this is something I could never really do with my little guys. But little girls and pinwheels = love.

50mm f/1.2L lens, 1/500 sec at f/2.0, ISO 250

7:05 pm: Back to the bench. I think we had briefly taken away the pinwheel. I’m pretty sure that’s what she is eyeing so intently. Love the greens in this one. Notice the grass is back? Thanks, mom.

50mm f/1.2L lens, 1/500 sec at f/2.0, ISO 250

7:06 pm: And… the pinwheel is back. Yay. Look at the light! Ok, I’ll stop talking about the light.

50mm f/1.2L lens, 1/500 sec at f/2.0, ISO 250

7:07 pm: Ok, these next two? They seriously kill me. Sweet little girl in a sweet little white dress + golden light + her favorite stuffed bunny + a pretty parasol. What is not to love?

50mm f/1.2L lens, 1/500 sec at f/2.0, ISO 250

7:08 pm: Making sure bunny was cozy.

50mm f/1.2L lens, 1/500 sec at f/2.0, ISO 250

7:12 pm: And we ended with a few more family shots to take advantage of the beautiful end of day light.

50mm f/1.2L lens, 1/200 sec at f/2.0, ISO 250

Thank you for indulging me. It was interesting to me to go through a session this closely. Stay tuned for more posts very soon (I hope). And if you found this at all helpful or had any of your own thoughts/observations, I’d love to hear them. Comments make me happy.

I just realized I have never posted one of my finished wedding albums on here. And since I just finished up with the proof of one that I really love, I thought I might as well share it here. This is the album for Alyssa and Mike’s lovely Milwaukee May wedding. My style in album design is to keep the pages clean and relatively simple. White backgrounds. I never use graphics and I rarely use text. I think that by keeping the focus on the images, the albums will feel more timeless. I like to think that Alyssa and Mike could open this album on their tenth anniversary and still love the way that it looks…

Enough talk. This is the album. It is 10×10 inches square, so all the layouts but the first and last pages show a two page spread. Once I get it back from the printer, I might update with photos of the real thing. Believe me, these albums are just gorgeous in person.

This was a very special wedding for me. Not only because every part of it, from the venue to the ceremony music to the extraordinary details at the reception, was just so incredibly creative. But also because I was there from the beginning… or at least from the beginning of their engagement. Way back in fall of 08, Rebecca contacted me to schedule a session with her boyfriend and their dogs. Sneaky Jeremy surprised everyone (including me!) by proposing during our session. (You can see their engagement photos here). I was beyond honored when they chose their wedding date based partially on my availability. And of course it was so very fun to be part of their story from the start of their engagement to the start of their marriage. Jeremy told me toward the end of their reception that he hoped I would be their lifelong photographer, for any future family members that might enter the picture down the road. I love that. I love being a small part of their story. Congratulations, you two. Anytime you need a photographer, I’m your girl.

These are just cell phone camera pics, but I adore them. I wish I had my better camera with me, but I’m still so happy I took them. I guess is another example of why you should always, always have a camera with you to capture these little moments. It all goes by so fast. And right now… it is all pretty special. My boys. Summer 2010.

ps. The title of this post comes from the poem “Fern Hill” by Dylan Thomas. I love it. Here’s the whole thing…

Now as I was young and easy under the apple boughs
About the lilting house and happy as the grass was green,
The night above the dingle starry,
Time let me hail and climb
Golden in the heydays of his eyes,
And honoured among wagons I was prince of the apple towns
And once below a time I lordly had the trees and leaves
Trail with daisies and barley
Down the rivers of the windfall light.

And as I was green and carefree, famous among the barns
About the happy yard and singing as the farm was home,
In the sun that is young once only,
Time let me play and be
Golden in the mercy of his means,
And green and golden I was huntsman and herdsman, the calves
Sang to my horn, the foxes on the hills barked clear and cold,
And the sabbath rang slowly
In the pebbles of the holy streams.

All the sun long it was running, it was lovely, the hay
Fields high as the house, the tunes from the chimneys, it was air
And playing, lovely and watery
And fire green as grass.
And nightly under the simple stars
As I rode to sleep the owls were bearing the farm away,
All the moon long I heard, blessed among stables, the nightjars
Flying with the ricks, and the horses
Flashing into the dark.

And then to awake, and the farm, like a wanderer white
With the dew, come back, the cock on his shoulder: it was all
Shining, it was Adam and maiden,
The sky gathered again
And the sun grew round that very day.
So it must have been after the birth of the simple light
In the first, spinning place, the spellbound horses walking warm
Out of the whinnying green stable
On to the fields of praise.

And honoured among foxes and pheasants by the gay house
Under the new made clouds and happy as the heart was long,
In the sun born over and over,
I ran my heedless ways,
My wishes raced through the house high hay
And nothing I cared, at my sky blue trades, that time allows
In all his tuneful turning so few and such morning songs
Before the children green and golden
Follow him out of grace,

Nothing I cared, in the lamb white days, that time would take me
Up to the swallow thronged loft by the shadow of my hand,
In the moon that is always rising,
Nor that riding to sleep
I should hear him fly with the high fields
And wake to the farm forever fled from the childless land.
Oh as I was young and easy in the mercy of his means,
Time held me green and dying.
Though I sang in my chains like the sea.

This post features the sleepiest newborn I have ever photographed. Introducing little baby K, who was just over a week old when she had her newborn session at the studio. She was awake for maybe the first 5 minutes, then spent the rest of the session in dreamland. And she even graced me with some sweet smiles! It was pretty incredible. I love so many of these images — I had a really hard time narrowing down from the original amount I had selected for the blog. Such a sweetheart. Welcome to the world, little one.
