welcome.

Hello and welcome to my photoblog. I am delighted to have you here! This blog serves as a way of sharing my most recent photo sessions with clients and their family and friends, and is also the first place to hear recent announcements about the studio as well as special blog-reader only discounts.

I am a primarily natural light portrait photographer based out of Madison, Wisconsin. My focus is on babies, children and families, although I also love to shoot a limited number of weddings per year. My portrait sessions take place entirely on location -- either at your home or at another location around Madison. I love to explore new places, so I'm very open to your suggestions. And of course, I have some favorite spots that I'm always ready to explore again as well.

In addition to my blog, please also check out my main website (it is the "my website" link on the menu above). If you have any questions or would like to book a session, please click on the "contact me" link in the menu above to send me an e-mail. Thanks again for stopping by, and please enjoy your visit!

style.

My approach toward photography is deceptively simple: catch real moments of your children really being themselves. Silly giggles, sweet kisses from mommy, tickles from a big sister, laughing while watching doggie run through the park... These are the moments that make up real life. These are the moments from childhood that pass by all too fast. And these moments, to me, are where the real beauty of childhood resides. The same philosophy governs my approach to wedding photography.

My style is largely photojournalistic and non-obtrusive, while at the same time I am always working to create beautiful and lasting memories of life as it unfolds. The most common words used to describe my photographs are the ones I have chosen as the tagline for my studio: Modern. Fun. Real. Life. People often comment that my photographs have a sense of warmth and emotion to them -- which I consider the highest compliment possible.

beautiful boy.

Meet sweet and wonderful one week old N. He and his momma came into the studio for a session on his one week birthday, and a few days later we had a shortened session so that we could get a few photos with his dad too. I don’t have to tell you that they are...

dreamland.

This post features the sleepiest newborn I have ever photographed. Introducing little baby K, who was just over a week old when she had her newborn session at the studio. She was awake for maybe the first 5 minutes, then spent the rest of the session in dreamland. And she even graced me with some...

warmth.

I have to share some images from a newborn session that I shot about a month ago. This new little girl was just about a week old.  Her big brother was about 3. And he reminded me so so much of my oldest boy. It was lovely to watch them interact together. Those early moments...

Two thousand and nine.

What a year. I opened the studio, went to a fantastic photo workshop, did a bit of traveling, and added a new member to my family! In addition to all of this, I also had the great pleasure of photographing so many beautiful families, babies, children, and pets, as well as a number of absolutely...

… and sometimes they don’t sleep.

I tell just about every new parent who comes to me for newborn photos the same thing: they are unpredictable. It makes sense if you think about it. Here are these tiny new little people, who have just spent the last 9 months of their very new lives in the security of their mom’s warm,...

completely booked for 2009.

As of a couple of weeks ago, I am completely booked for 2009.  With my second child due in December, I am taking on a reduced schedule in early 2010 (I will be photographing current Baby Sprout and past clients only) but will be back to my normal schedule starting in April 2010.  If you...

Mr. R.

Little Mr. R was just about two weeks old when he and his mother and grandmother came into the studio for his newborn session. He was a really sweet baby — it seemed to me that his favorite thing in the world is being held by his mom. Welcome to the world, little R! It...

And baby makes four.

I’m delighted to introduce baby F to the world. He is the little brother of Mr. M, and the whole family came into the studio a little while back for a newborn session.  Baby F was snuggly and sleepy, big brother M was curious and sweet, and the whole thing was just pretty delightful. I’m...

an afternoon with miss e.

I recently had the pleasure of spending the afternoon with a lovely couple from Nebraska and their adorable little 7 week old, Miss E. They came into the studio for a sort of newborn/new baby session (7 weeks is later than I’d really consider a newborn session, but she certainly still has that undeniable sense...

So sweet.

Just one, from a newborn session in the studio this afternoon. It isn’t all that often that I am lucky enough to photograph a newborn session with older siblings, and I love the emotion and connection here. This is family.
